Jump In, Join & Let the SOTF Adventures Begin!

We’re so glad you found Sisters on the fly! It's such an amazing organization.

Our Community

Sisters on the fly is a versatile and inclusive group comprised of women of all ages (>21) and lifestyles who have joined together to spend some time away from our normal lives and loved ones to just relax, play, enjoy this amazing world we live in, and meet other like-minded women who want to broaden their horizons. Our favorite thing about SOTF is that it gives us the opportunity to be a part of a community no matter how mobile we are. That's a tough thing to find in this day and age.

Our Modus Operandi

Our one corporate rule is "No men, no kids, be nice & have fun!" So leave it all behind in your rearview mirror, join us and start new adventures of a lifetime. Joining the group is a fairly simple process. You just sign up & pay your initial annual Membership Fee of $70.00 on the main Web Site: www.sistersonthefly.com. There is a JOIN button that will lead you through the sign-up process. You also renew each year in the same way. Or, if you don’t love it, you can always just not renew your membership after a year. The Sister Number that you were assigned when you joined? That you get to keep forever, no matter if you are a "lifer" or not.

Our Network to Connect

Once you’re a member you will have access to the entire membership roster, all posted scheduled events worldwide, and our private social media pages. This makes it easy to learn about, book and participate in events wherever,  if space is available. It’s wonderful to attend events all over and meet Sisters in other regions, whether they are neighboring ones or across the country.

Our Privacy is Protected

Safety is important to SOTF and to our members so we don’t make access to Sisters contact information available until you are a member. Once you become a member that information is available for you to reach out and join others on adventures or to eventually create, host & invite members to your own event via our event booking pages.

Our Member-Hosted Events

SOTF events are typically scheduled for the state or region that members live in and are limited only by a member's own imagination.  Have a look on our website at our SOTF Activities Calendar that we post for a general overview of what’s going in the world of SOTF and where we are and when throughout the year. It is very generic, though, and specific event locations have been withheld for privacy purposes.

Our Members are Creative Sleepers!

You don’t need to have a trailer at all to participate, let alone have a vintage trailer. Those retro relics have become a convenient and creative outlet for many of our members and are great for having a safe, warm place to rest before the next day’s fun. Many of our members have full size RVs,  assorted tents, teepees, create a bed in their SUV or stay in local cabins & hotels - and have creative fun setting up their own "nesting" spot at an event! The most important thing here is that you come and stay to enjoy the Sisterhood & community.

Our Fishy Beginnings

Co-founders and real life sisters, Maurrie Sussman and Rebecca Clarke, who are life-long campers and avid fly fishers created Sisters on the fly by inviting friends to join them on their adventures. Who knew how it would grow and touch the lives of so many others? Over time the organization has become so much more than fly fishing, which isn’t a requirement for membership. It has evolved to become a meetup for coffee or lunch, a weekend at the beach, a wine tasting event or a month long caravan trip across the country. We love to try new things, so our events are incredibly varied.

Our "Free-Range" Membership

We don’t have chapters. We don't have fence lines or borders! Sisters on the fly is a national organization with members in every state and some foreign countries. Check out this BLOG to give you an idea of the number of members in your area. Once you join, there are key member coordinators identified in your regional area who keep you and your local members in touch, in tune and in the know about all things Sister on the fly.

As a “traveling club" our members set up campouts or special events and everyone is welcome to attend (first come first served). So, once you join you’ll want to watch the EVENTS portal on the website to make sure you don’t miss seeing an event opportunity. AND be thinking about organizing and hosting your own event to invite members to.

Our Events are YOU Sharing Your Passions with Your Sisters

We've had over 11,000 Sisters join us worldwide since 1999. Some states have huge numbers of Sisters such as Texas & California, and we are growing all the time. You only need a couple of other members to make for a lovely event. You may meet for coffee or lunch and other locally planned events, or you may want to travel far and wide, like many of our members do, and hit the road to enjoy new adventures with new and old Sister friends.

DO this For yourself!

Here are direct links to join us in the fun!

- auto renewing membership
- non-recurring membership

Questions? Please send them our way at membership@sistersonthefly.com

We look forward to assigning you your Sister Number soon!

Cheers!

Women Who Weld! Learning Something New!

In this blog post, Maurrie Sussman, co-founder of Sisters on the fly, writes about the most recent SOTF event she hosted near her home in Montana.

Putting Pieces Together

Ever see a metal bucket and just know that this is a perfect fit to another piece of metal, and if we could just melt them together we could make a doo-dad that would be perfect on our gate or trailer?Well, we thought the same thing so decided to organize a welding class. Oh my! Now, we know how to do that after this very special class held in a welding shop in beautiful Absarokee, Montana!

A New SOTF Event Created

At this two-day session, we truly had the time of our lives.  Talk about "Girl Power-" you could feel it in the air.  We indeed did it.  Not a problem here, not with our team of Go Get Em Girls. No slackers here for sure.

The Plan & Scope

The girls arrived on a Tuesday and brought their trailers and tents. I saw visions of circling around the fire pit but, no, we have independent thinkers, and it looked like someone dropped trailers from the sky. Kerplunk. Done.  (That gives you an idea of the mindset of our new crew.  No one decorated- just got out, put awnings and chairs up and were ready to get to know each other. No fuss, no frills women. I loved it.

Wednesday morning class started. We had more gear than we needed.  Girls brought extra stuff and shared.  My job was taking care of the group, cater lunches & breakfasts, run around in the ATV, and be jealous of the progress and the welding taking place.

Scott, the owner of Infinite Machine Metal Working & Welding, and his friend Bob taught girls the basics and then Wanda and Kaarin, who had learned from Bob, stepped in and helped with the simple stuff.  Mandi took over who, with her whirlwind personality, learned every tool and every possible configuration in a day. Sherry stood firm and helped with all the quiet stuff.  It really looked to me like girls in a NASCAR pit: everyone running full blast in different directions while learning, sharing, laughing and praising each other and their designs.

Horseshoes & Helmets

Horseshoes were the favorite go to and learn…Horseshoe bowls, trivets, boot pulls, gate décor, stakes in the earth, showing off your Sister number cut in steel… Me? Still jealous I didn't get to create anything being the hostess & go-fer for everyone.

The next day though, I got in the fray of activity and became one who zipped and zapped, learned to weld a pretty ugly bead line. But I did it, learned how to remove the splats of weld with a sanding machine with steel pad…and it polish it too.  Mandi and I learned how to color steel and how to cut designs free hand.  Oh what fun we had… It is great and women can handle this with no problem, just that the steel is heavy and very oily and dirty. But who cares about a little grease!

More Welding to Be Had

Next year we will have two classes, Welding 101 and Welding 201.  More control over projects and teams working together with a purpose.  We took up a lot of time and used a lot of steel that we did not order. But we had a wonderful time learning to weld.

For the other activities, we had tickets for a tour to Tippet Rise and 5 ATVs headed to the Beartooth Mountains and had the most fabulous day..

The story does not end…. Come next year.

Learn About Upcoming SOTF Events BEFORE Joining

Finding Where the Fun Is

This is a big mystery for women who are looking into joining. How can they learn about events in their area or in general BEFORE joining?

Since Sisters on the fly events are privately published for members and advertised solely to members (unlike Meetup where events are public and the locations are disclosed) it is hard to "see" our upcoming events.

Three ways to Get a sense of it all

TEASER ACTIVITIES CALENDAR-
Because of this we have created a very generic Activities/Events calendar for public viewing. It is very generic and not completely up to date since new events are being created weekly and old ones are not removed. View this "Teaser" calendar under our SOTF website's ACTIVITIES tab or click HERE.

SHORT LIST OF TYPES OF EVENTS
This list was created so gals can read a short synopsis of some of the types of events held. See that list on our Member-Hosted Events page HERE.

Before Joining SOTF You want more Info, Right?

You found us!

I'm so glad you found Sisters on the Fly. It's such a fun organization.

Sisters on the Fly is a really unique group. It's comprised of women of all ages, lifestyles and marital status who have joined together to spend some time away from our normal lives and loved ones to just relax, play, enjoy this amazing world we live in, and meet other like-minded women who want to broaden their horizons. My favorite thing about SOTF is that it gives us the opportunity to be a part of a community no matter how mobile we are. That's a tough thing to find in this day and age.

Joining the group is a fairly simple process. You just sign up & pay your initial annual Membership Fee of $70.00 on the main Web Site: www.sistersonthefly.com. There is a JOIN button that will lead you through the sign-up process. You can choose to auto-renew each year or play it by ear (and not pick the auto renew option).

Private Sisterhood & Info Database

Once you have signed up you will have full access to the entire membership roster and all the events on the calendar, worldwide. So, if you are traveling or are a snowbird you can attend any events that have space available in any area you are visiting or living.

I’m sure you will be glad to hear that until you are a member you will not have access to the Sisters contact info for member safety sake. Once a member, you can reach out to the Sisters in your area to get together for coffee or lunch, so you can immediately start to get to know them.

Events Near You

The Sisters on the Fly events are generally scheduled for the state or region that gals live and their personal interests. And since the members put on the events we are only limited by our own imaginations. Once you’ve been to an event you can start thinking about the events you would like to Hostess. Have a look on our website at our SOTF Activities Daily Calendar that we post for a general overview of what’s going in the world of SOTF and where we are and when throughout the year. (Not every single event is there as there are new events being born daily.)

No trailer? No fishing? No problem!

You don’t need to have a trailer at all to participate, let alone have a vintage trailer. They are just a great tool so you have a safe warm place to nest while resting before the next day’s fun. Many of our members have new trailers or stay in cabins, hotels, tents, teepees, or create a bed in their SUV. The most important thing is to come & enjoy the Sisterhood. Trailers are convenient & they are such a fun creative outlet which explains why we love them.

Maurrie Sussman & Becky Clark, the real-life sisters that started Sisters on the Fly, are avid campers and fly fishers. Thus, our name & the basic intent of the group. However, it has become so much more than that, and fly fishing isn't required, because we can enjoy any event the members think up and put on. We love to try new things, so our events are incredibly varied.

State & Regional Hubs

We don’t have chapters. This is a national organization and we have members in every state. As a “traveling” club the members set up campouts or special events and everyone, Nationwide, is welcome to attend (first come first served). So, once you join you want to watch the events tab on the website to make sure you don’t miss an event.

It’s always best to just take the step & join the Sisterhood! It's a year to year subscription and you can "try" it for a year for $70. If you don't love it, you do not have to renew when your membership is up (calendar year).

We have over 10,000 Sisters Worldwide and some states have huge numbers of Sisters such as Texas & California, but all 50 states and Canada are growing all the time. You only need a couple of other gals to make for a lovely camping trip. You will however need to be willing to travel as this is not a sedentary group. We love to travel & meet with other Sisters with the same interests.

We ain't Pageant Material, Sisters!

Crazy Fun- The Best Fun

Pageant Material by Kacey Musgraves is saying it best about this fabulous group of Sisters at our annual Northwest Gathering event. A huge thanks to our Sister who created this video, Jennifer Pesko #2662.

Learn the Lyrics

[Verse 1]
There's certain things you're s'posed to know
When you're a girl who grows up in the south
I try to use my common sense
But my foot always ends up in my mouth
And if I had to walk a runway in high heels in front of the whole town
I'd fall down
And my mama cried
When she realized

[Chorus]
I ain't pageant material
I'm always higher than my hair
And it ain't that I don't care about world peace
But I don't see how I can fix it in a swimsuit on a stage
I ain't exactly Ms. Congenial
Sometimes I talk before I think, I try to fake it but I can't
I'd rather lose for what I am than win for what I ain't

[Verse 2]
God bless the girls who smile and hug
When they're called out as a runner up on TV
I wish I could, but I just can't
Wear a smile when a smile ain't what I'm feelin'
And who's to say I'm a 9.5
Or a 4.0 if you don't even know me
Life ain't always roses and pantyhose
And...

[Intstrumental bridge]

[Chorus]
I ain't pageant material
The only crown is in my glass
They won't be handin' me a sash
And that's okay, cause there's no way
You'll ever see me in a swimsuit on a stage
I ain't exactly Ms. Congenial
Sometimes I talk before I think, I try to fake it but I can't
I'd rather lose for what I am than win for what I ain't
Yeah I'd rather lose for what I am than win for what I ain't

Livin' in Aluminum Fun!

Trailer Park Anthem

Antsy McClain and The Trailer Park Troubadours are saying it best here, ladies!

Watch this Sister-made video by SOTF Jennifer Pesko #2662now!

Learn the words and sing along!
[Verse 1]
There's allot to be said about contentment
Some folks ain't' never get enough
Well let me ask you honey which is better
A mansion full of money or a trailer full of love?
[Verse 2]
There's allot to be said about acceptance
Liking who you are and having peace of mind
The secrets being happy with your lot & life baby
Then I'm pretty happy here in lot number nine
[Chorus]
Living in aluminum
Living in aluminum
[Verse 3]
I don't need a house of tiles
I don't need a house of wood
There ain't no better way to test your metal
Than in a semi-gracious metal neighborhood
[Chorus]
Living in aluminum
Living in aluminum
[Verse 4]
There's allot to be said about conviction
You live the golden rule with God on your side
Now don't forget another quote of living
It's the aluminum rule "thou shalt enjoy the ride"
[Chorus]
Lii-ving in aluminum
Living in aluminum
[Verse 5]
Having it all is like putting up a wall around you
You'll be a slave to the treasure as you measure every nickel and dime
Soon you're gonna see a big pile of debris surround you
And ill be sure and send you a postcard from freedom sometime
[Outro]
Living in aluminum
(living in aluminum)
Living in aluminum
Living in aluminum
Li-i-i-ving in aluminum

Where (and who) is Tiffany?

Wonderful Women in Waxahachie

Sister #1, SOTF Founder Maurrie Sussman and I had the pleasure to represent our Sisterhood at this event within an event. The big event being the Crossroads Film & Music Festival put on by the Waxahachie Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Texas Draw

It was an over the top event and drew so many "Wonderful Women" campers & attendees to it. I fell in love with the Texas Sisters I met, the locals, the town, the history and local tastes and color. The blue bells were still in bloom for us and the weather was kind of classic for Texas- gorgeous until the flash flood downpour hit! If my husband's ex wasn't from Texas, I would've make a seriously hard pitch to relocate from Boise there and may have had a chance! C'est la vie, y'all...

The Stories

There are so many great stories to tell from this event but there was a first-time camper there who tells hers so well and when we asked if we could share her blog article about her experience this was her reply:

"Thank you. I wish I had more time to spend with everyone as well. I hope our paths cross again and we get a chance to camp out or hangout. I enjoyed my time hanging out with so many likeminded people. I walked away with a whole new perspective and love for camping. Yes, please share. I created the blog to inspire, encourage and give hope to those that dream of traveling or traveling solo. Thank you for reading my story. Part 2 will be up on May 13."

Her Story

Tiffany attended this event as a tent camper having not camped much and wanting a sense of what women campers were all about. Here is the link to Tiffany's blog article. Enjoy her story and her amazing photos:
